ATLAS.ti memo before you create codes in ATLAS.ti, then this is a suitable way to proceed as well. If you already have some ideas for codes while reading, then go straight ahead and start coding in ATLAS.ti. Do whatever feels most natural to you.

Mothers were more likely than fathers to use words like friends, creative, time, and honest; fathers were more likely than mothers to use words like school, good, lack, student, enjoys, independent, and extremely. Ryan and Weisner used this information as clues for themes that they would use later in actually coding the texts. 2.
In ATLAS.ti quotations are independent objects, in the sense that they can be created independently of coding. This allows for an open-ended approach to the data. Read this manual section which describes data segmentation and coding. The Code Manager. Watch here.
The same is true for code metadata (you can track who created what code if each coder logs into Atlas.ti whenever they go code). You can then run any query you want sorted or filtered by author.

ATLAS.ti™ users achieved this by using the co-occurrence feature to identify any data to which multiple codes have been applied. For example, O'Halloran (2011) used co-occurrences to compare and contrast the types of discussions that occurred in different types of reading groups (see Figure 4 ).
